Auslan, short for Australian Sign Language, is the primary language of the Deaf community in Australia. It is a visual language that uses hand shapes, facial expressions, and body movements to convey meaning.
Learning Auslan promotes inclusivity and understanding at our school. By incorporating it into our curriculum, we help break down communication barriers and give students the tools to connect with Deaf peers and the wider community.
At Takari Primary School, students in Years 1-6 have begun learning Auslan which includes two interrelated strands: Communicating (the practical skill of signing) and Understanding (knowledge of language and Deaf culture in Australia).
